Demystifying Chandrashtama: A Practical and Scientific Guide

In Vedic Astrology, few terms spark as much unnecessary anxiety in the almanacs or panchangs as Chandrashtama. Many people become obsessed, declaring they cannot work, contact anyone, or leave their homes during this window. However, using Astrology for self-limitation defeats its true purpose. Astrology is a tool meant to offer practical awareness, not fear. Chandrashtama is simply a brief cosmic weather alert that occurs once every 28 days. By understanding its mechanics, you can transform a period of potential vulnerability into a time of mindful, strategic action.

If you prefer watching my YouTube video on Chandrashtama then here it is...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eLx1A54khc&t=1s

What is Chandrashtama?
The word can be broken down into two distinct parts:
Chandra: The Moon.
Ashta(ma) : Number 8

What is Transit of Moon ?

The Moon goes around the 12 zodiac signs in the horoscope once every 28 days. There are 12 signs for 28 days, so the Moon takes approximately takes 2.333 days to travel  1 zodiac sign. The movement of Moon going from a zodiac sign to the next one is called Transit of Moon. In the same way Jupiter Transit means Jupiter is moving into the next sign. Transit means moving into the next sign (usually). Rahu and Ketu transit into the previous sign as Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde (Vakra). Moon never retrogrades.

Chandrashtama occurs when Transit Moon enters the 8th house or zodiac sign counted from your natal Moon sign. As told before,  the Moon travels quickly through the 12 zodiacs, it spends roughly 2.33 days in this eighth sign before moving forward.

To identify Chandrashtama days you treat your natal Moon sign as house number one and count forward.

For a Mesha Rashi (Aries) person: Counting eight signs forward brings you to Vrishchika Rashi (Scorpio). Whenever the transit Moon passes through Scorpio, a Mesha Moon sign individual experiences Chandrashtama.

For a Mithuna Rashi (Gemini) person: Counting eight signs forward from Gemini brings you to Makara Rashi (Capricorn).

When the transit Moon enters Capricorn, it marks Chandrashtama for Gemini individuals. Capricorn consists of three stars: Uttarashadha, Shravana, and Dhanishta. By referring to a panchang, you can see if the transit Moon is currently crossing these stars to identify the exact window.

The General Chandrashtama (2.333 days) :
When the Transit Moon goes through the 8th zodiac Sign from wherever the Moon in your horoscope is, those 2.333 days are your general Chandrashtama day. Let me help you with the simple maths. If your Moon Sign (where the Moon is in your birth chart  also knowns as Janma Rasi or Janam Rasi) happens to be Aries (Mesha) then Chandrashtama days happen when Transit Moon is in Scorpio (Vrischika). The Peak Chandrashtama day :

The Rule of 16
From your Star count the 16th star. Your star is counted as the 1st star. The next star to your birth star is the 2nd star. If you continue counting, you will soon reach the 16th star from your Janma Nakshatra.

Let me give you an example. Let's say a person was born during a time when the Moon in the horoscope was in Aswini Nakshatra. This is star number 1 in the list of 27 stars. Count from Aswini and count till you reach the 16th. As told before Aswini star is the No.1 star for you. The 16th star happens to be Vishakha. The approximately 24 hours when Moon in Transit happens to be in Vishakha star zone, it is peak Chandrashtama.

You calculate the peak star using the rule of 16 counting from your own birth star as 1.

Ashwini (Star #1): The 16th star from Ashwini is Vishakha (calculated as 16 - 1 = 15, then + 1 = 16). Because Vishakha is the 16th star, it marks the exact peak Chandrashtama for an Ashwini native.

Bharani (Star #2): The peak for Bharani will be the 17th star (Anuradha). This is calculated as 17 - 2 = 15, then always adding + 1 because you must count from the same birth star.

Here is the exact line-by-line breakdown for all 27 stars in the Vedic Horoscope. If you do not known your birth star use this website to know. Click on know your moon sign.

Practical Solutions:

Using Astrology Positively

Knowing your Peak Chandrashtama time  should not make you fearful. Instead, tell yourself: "Today is a Chandrashtama day, let me be more careful in what I do and what I say.

Additional Facts about Peak Chandrashtama time

As told before do not use the knowledge of Chandrashtama days or Peak Chandrashtama times for doing regular routine day to day activities. How can a businessman close down his shop on this day. Such decisions will only make things worse. Major decision making that is not a day to day activity should be avoided. For example do not do a product launch on this day. Do not do housewarming on this day if you are the owner of the property. Are these activities done everyday? Ask this question. On the other hand

During a 7.5 years Saturn phase : If you are going through a 7.5 years Saturn phase also known as Sade Sati then please give importance to Chandrashtama days especially the peak Chandrashtama days. Avoid high risk and luck based activities like gambling and share market investment etc.

During an Ashtama Sani phase : If you are going through an Ashtama Sani phase then Chandrashtama days can get very challenging and troublesome. The reason is that Saturn and Moon will be  together in the sky during the Chandrashtama days. It may therefore be double trouble. It is better to pray to your favourite God or Goddess and seek blessings. Avoid high risk activities and such activities that require a lot of luck.

Double-Check Logistics:  If you are traveling for a very important life changing work, re-verify everything. Many times, people arrive at an airport or railway station only to realize they left their passports behind. Knowing it is Chandrashtama alerts you to recheck your bags and belongings carefully.

Prepare for Meetings: If you have an important life changing meeting to attend, check thoroughly to ensure all your files, points, data, and materials are in perfect order. Check the battery level in the gadgets you use.

Postpone Difficult Conversations: If you have a sensitive issue or disagreement with your boss, do not try to bring it up or resolve it during your peak Chandrashtama times.

Avoid Speeding: If you are driving on a highway, remind yourself of the transit. Tell yourself, "Today is peak chandrashtama, let me not try to drive like a world car racing champion." Wear seat belts, never use your phone while driving, stay calm, and strictly follow all traffic rules even within the city limits.

Defer Non-Emergencies: If you have a choice in scheduling, do not get admitted into a hospital for elective procedures during these days.

The best way to use Astrology is to mark out the Chandrashtama days for the entire year in advance. This allows you to plan your major high risk travel and key schedules perfectly in accordance with these cosmic cycles.

We make DIPA Astrology Diary every year. In the DIPA Astrology Diary 2026, we have provided below the Chandrashtama Days for each Rasi. We have not done the specific method.
