What is Putra Dosha? पुत्रदोष ?
Putra (पुत्र) means children, although it is often wrongly translated as “son.” In the context of Astrology, Putra includes both sons and daughters. For centuries, people in India and elsewhere believed that only a son carried forward the family’s genetic inheritance and lineage. Today, however, we understand that daughters also inherit and carry forward the genetic material of their parents.
The Sanskrit word Dosha (दोष) can mean a defect, fault, imbalance, affliction or harmful condition. However, none of these words alone conveys its complete meaning in Vedic Astrology.
Putra Dosha (पुत्रदोष) may be translated as a “karmic affliction concerning children.” It indicates a serious karmic difficulty connected with conception, childbirth or children, but it does not necessarily mean complete childlessness. However, when several severe afflictions are present in the horoscopes of both husband and wife, the possibility of denial of children may have to be considered.
Putra Dosha may manifest as difficulty in conception, the need for medical assistance to have a child, delayed childbirth, miscarriage or abortion, lifelong anxiety about one’s children, or prolonged suffering caused through them. The key word here is high level of concern due to children either by their absence or by their presence.
What Is Putra Dosha?
Putra Dosha is one of the most widely discussed—and frequently misunderstood—subjects in Vedic Astrology. Putra refers to children, including sons and daughters, while Dosha means an affliction or imbalance. Putra Dosha therefore refers to karmic difficulties connected with conception, pregnancy, childbirth, children and the happiness expected through them.
Because this subject deeply affects human life, it must be approached with great care. A careless prediction can frighten a couple, disturb their marriage and influence some of the most important decisions of their lives. Putra Dosha should never be declared from one planetary position alone. The entire horoscope—and preferably the horoscopes of both husband and wife—must be carefully examined.
Why Is the 5th House Connected with Children?
The relationship between marriage, desire and children is beautifully concealed within the structure of the horoscope. The 7th house represents marriage, the spouse and physical union, while the 11th house represents fulfilment of desires. When we count the 11th house from the 7th, we arrive at the 5th house—the house of children. Symbolically, therefore, one of the greatest fulfilments arising from marriage is the birth of a child.
For many couples, a child is not simply another person added to the family. The child becomes the embodiment of their union, the continuation of their lineage and one of the most meaningful fulfilments of married life. This is perhaps why the joy surrounding childbirth is unlike any other joy. It is experienced not merely as an event, but as a blessing and the flowering of Poorva Punya—the merit carried forward from previous lives.
Putra Dosha Is Not Merely Childlessness
Many people assume that Putra Dosha simply means that a person will have no children. This is an incomplete understanding. Childlessness is only one of its most severe manifestations.
Putra Dosha may appear as delayed conception, infertility, repeated medical treatment, miscarriage, anxiety during pregnancy, complications in childbirth or concern about a child’s health and development. In other cases, children may be born without difficulty but later become the parents’ greatest source of worry.
A child may be disobedient, emotionally distant or repeatedly troubled. There may be separation because of education, employment, marriage, foreign residence, family disputes or divorce between the parents. A child’s difficulties may also produce heavy expenditure, mental suffering or even a sudden decline in the parent’s career and social position.
The correct question is therefore not merely, “Will children be born?” We must also ask, “Will the person receive happiness through children?”
The Karmic Background of Putra Dosha
From the perspective of Vedic Astrology, Putra Dosha may arise from unfinished Karma relating to children. It can indicate that a person neglected a child, misused parental authority, avoided a sacred responsibility or caused suffering to someone young and dependent in a previous birth. The severity experienced in the present life may correspond to the seriousness of that earlier failure.
However, no Astrologer can confidently describe the exact past-life incident from one combination in a horoscope. Astrology may reveal the existence of an unpaid karmic account, but it does not always reveal every transaction that created it. Therefore, such interpretations must be offered with humility and compassion.
Parenthood as a Sacred Responsibility
Our parents nourish, protect and educate us when we are completely helpless. A newborn cannot survive without someone’s love and care. Just imagine a world without the tenderness of a mother or the protection of a father. Even if we serve our parents devotedly in their old age, we can never return everything they gave us in exactly the same form. Life therefore provides another way to repay this debt of love: we become parents and give our children the same protection, affection and guidance that we once received.
This reflects the timeless law of Karma: as we sow, so shall we reap. The love planted by one generation bears fruit in the next. Our parents cared for us; we care for our children; and our children may one day care for theirs. What we receive from the past is not meant to end with us—it must flow through us towards the future.
This instinct is not limited to human beings. Animals and birds also feed, guard and nurture their young until they can survive independently. The crow, in particular, is known for its watchful and persistent care of its young. Nature itself seems to remind us that protecting the helpless is not merely an emotional choice; it is a sacred responsibility woven into life.
There is also another fascinating way to understand this karmic cycle. An ancestor who has departed—perhaps a grandfather, grandmother or even someone from an earlier generation—may return to the same family in the form of a child. This belief may explain why, in Tamil Nadu and several other parts of India, a newborn is sometimes named after a departed grandparent. The name is more than a remembrance; it quietly expresses the hope that the soul has returned to its own family.
Seen from this perspective, the working of Karma becomes clearer. The child whom we lovingly protect today may carry an ancient connection with us. In another birth, when we ourselves return as helpless children, we may receive care according to the love and protection we have given. The hands that cradle a child today may be creating the very Karma through which that soul will be protected tomorrow.
This continuing exchange of love allows both human life and civilisation to survive. If parents everywhere refused to feed, protect and educate their children, society would collapse within a generation. Caring for a child is therefore not merely a personal preference. It is one of the most sacred duties accepted by a husband and wife when they bring a new life into the world.
To deliberately abandon, exploit or neglect a helpless child is consequently a serious failure of Dharma. A child cannot defend itself or understand the dangers surrounding it. The greater its helplessness, the greater our responsibility. Karma remembers both sides of the relationship: the love we received and passed forward, as well as the sacred duty we knowingly refused.
What We Reject May Become What We Seek
Life sometimes teaches us the value of something only after we have rejected it. We throw something away and later discover that it was exactly what we needed. Karma can work through a similar reversal: what was once considered unwanted may become the very blessing for which we later struggle.
This principle must never be used to shame someone who has experienced abortion, miscarriage or infertility. Such situations may involve medical danger, personal tragedy or circumstances unknown to outsiders. The deeper principle is that deliberate cruelty and irresponsible neglect may create a future lesson about the value of the life that was once disregarded.
Karma may also be compared to a loan. A person who repeatedly refuses to repay a bank may find future credit difficult and expensive. Similarly, when a sacred responsibility remains unfulfilled, life may demand repayment through delay, effort, sacrifice, expenditure or emotional pain.
For some couples, prolonged fertility treatment, uncertainty and heavy medical expenses may become part of this karmic experience. Doctors are not the cause of the Karma. They may, in fact, become the instruments through which help arrives. Yet the waiting, expense and emotional pressure surrounding treatment may form part of the lesson.
Return to the Original Source
When studying a sensitive subject such as Putra Dosha, wisdom demands that we proceed cautiously and return to the original source. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, attributed to Maharishi Parashara, is one of the foundational works of Vedic Astrology. Classical texts should therefore form our foundation, while the opinions of later and modern authors must be examined against that foundation.Modern books can help us interpret and apply Astrology, but they should not replace the source. When the authenticity of a later rule is uncertain, the words of the Maharishi deserve greater priority.
Maharishi Parashara on Happiness Through Children
Maharishi Parashara begins the chapter concerning the 5th house with an important expression:
पूर्णं पुत्रसुखम् — Pūrṇaṁ Putra-Sukham
Pūrṇam means complete or full. Putra means offspring or children, and Sukham means happiness, comfort and contentment. Parashara is therefore not speaking merely about the birth of a child. He is speaking about complete happiness received through children.
In case of Putra dosha, a child may be born, yet the parents may spend their entire lives worrying about the child’s health, character, education, marriage or future. The greatest blessing of the 5th house is therefore not merely having children, but receiving lasting happiness through them.
Poorna Putra Sukham may include timely childbirth, good health, character, education, prosperity, affection towards the parents and continuation of the family lineage. It is one of the most visible expressions of Poorva Punya.
Parashara’s Fundamental Rule
Parashara states that when the Ascendant lord and the 5th lord are favourably connected and well placed in the 5th house, Kendras or Trikonas, complete happiness through children may be predicted.
He then presents the opposite condition: षष्ठाष्टमव्ययस्थे तु सुताधीशे त्वपुत्रता
This means that when the 5th lord occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th house, childlessness or serious difficulty concerning children may be indicated.
The following verse adds that when the 5th lord is combust, afflicted by malefic planets and weak, a child may not be born or may not survive. This is an extremely strong classical statement, but it should not be applied mechanically. The wording suggests accumulated weakness. One isolated affliction should not automatically be converted into a prediction of childlessness.
Putra Bhagya: The Opposite of Putra Dosha
The opposite of Putra Dosha is Putra Bhagya—the good fortune of receiving children who bring happiness, affection and pride.
The 5th house represents both children and Poorva Punya. This connection is meaningful: good children are among the most visible gifts of past merit. Their birth brings joy, but their character, wellbeing, progress and relationship with their parents determine whether the person truly receives Putra Sukham.
Putra Bhagya should not be measured by the number or sex of the children. One loving and virtuous child may provide more happiness than several children who remain a lifelong source of anxiety. Sons and daughters are equally represented by Putra in this context. The birth of a daughter must never be treated as an expression of Putra Dosha.
The 5th Lord in a Dusthana
The 6th, 8th and 12th houses are known as Dusthanas. When the 5th lord occupies one of these houses, matters concerning children become connected with obstacles, illness, conflict, uncertainty, loss, separation or expenditure.
- The 5th lord in the 6th may connect children with health problems, debt, disagreement, legal conflict or opposition. In some horoscopes, children may behave like enemies or adoption may become relevant.
- The 5th lord in the 8th can indicate anxiety, sudden developments, reproductive difficulties, pregnancy loss or unexpected events involving children.
- The 5th lord in the 12th may produce medical expenditure, separation, foreign residence, loss of happiness through children or adoption.
The reverse also deserves attention. When the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th occupies the 5th house, the difficulties represented by that house are carried into matters concerning children.

My Observations on Dusthana Placements
During my years of examining horoscopes, I have repeatedly observed serious difficulties when the 5th lord occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th, particularly when the 5th house and its lord suffer additional afflictions. In a large percentage of childless couples I studied, the 5th house and its lord were severely afflicted or the 5th lord occupied a Dusthana.
However, this placement does not always deny children. Some people with it have sons or daughters, but the Dosha manifests through unusual circumstances surrounding birth, health concerns, emotional distance, heavy responsibility or a painful event involving one child.
Maharishi Parashara could not be right
I have also seen a person with the 5th lord placed in the 12th house who was blessed with 3 sons. He argued that while many people consider themselves fortunate to have even one son, he had three, and therefore declared that Maharishi Parashara could not be right about everything. I requested him to stop arguing about the classical rule and instead perform a simple remedy by donating money, clothes, books, toys, games or sports equipment to children living in an orphanage. Unfortunately, he refused to take my suggestions. Sadly, one of his sons later died tragically at the age of fourteen.
The birth of children does not always mean that the underlying Putra Dosha has disappeared.
These examples should not be used to predict a tragedy from one placement. Their purpose is to show why the Astrologer must examine the quality of happiness through children—not merely whether children are born.
Putra Dosha Has Different Degrees
If the placement of the 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th were sufficient by itself, three out of every twelve horoscopes would contain Putra Dosha. This would mean that approximately one-fourth of humanity must suffer complete denial of children, which is clearly not the case.
The rule instead shows how common some degree of difficulty concerning children can be. One person may experience a brief delay, another may require treatment, and a third may face lifelong anxiety. Only a much smaller number may experience complete denial.
The strength of a planet within a house also matters. A planet close to the effective centre of a house may express that house more powerfully, while a planet near a boundary may produce mixed or reduced results, depending upon the house system used.
Putra Dosha must therefore be measured, not merely detected. Finding one adverse rule is like noticing that a person has a temperature. The Astrologer must still determine whether it is mild, manageable or dangerously high.
Combustion of the 5th Lord
When the 5th lord comes very close to the Sun, it becomes combust and may lose some of its capacity to protect the matters it governs. Classical Astrology associates excessive heat with dryness and reduced fertility. Therefore, combustion of the 5th lord may contribute to difficulty in conception or childbirth, especially when other afflictions support the same conclusion.
Where the symbolism involves excessive heat, worship of Lord Shiva through Abhishekam is traditionally recommended. Water or milk is offered over the Shiva Linga with the intention of invoking cooling, healing and life-preserving grace. Such spiritual practices may accompany medical care; they should not replace it.
The maximum affliction due to combustion happens when the Sun and the 5th house lord is on the same degree, minutes and seconds of the arc, though is quite rare. However, I noticed that whenever the 5th lord and the Sun are within 1 degree from each other, then the results of the combust 5th house lord is 100% Putra Dosha.
Kakavandhya: Difficulty After One Child
Classical Astrology describes a condition known as Kakavandhya, in which one child is born but further conception or childbirth becomes difficult.
One cited combination involves the 5th lord occupying the 6th while the Ascendant lord is afflicted through a conjunction with Mars. Other combinations include a debilitated 5th lord placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th while Mercury occupies the 5th, or Saturn and Mercury occupying the 5th while its lord is weak or debilitated.
The full combination must be present before such a conclusion is considered. Finding one part of a Yoga is not enough. The indication should also be supported elsewhere in the horoscope.
The Importance of the 9th House
The 9th house is the 5th house counted from the 5th. Under the principle of Bhavat Bhavam, it becomes a deeper supporting house for children.
This distinction can be very helpful. An afflicted 5th house may say, “Not easily,” while a strong 9th house may reply, “But not impossible.” The child may arrive after delay, treatment, prayer or repeated effort, while the protection of the 9th prevents the difficulty from becoming complete denial.
The Protective Grace of Jupiter
Jupiter is the natural Putra Karaka, or significator of children. Its favourable aspect on the 5th house or 5th lord, or its conjunction with them, can provide important protection.
Jupiter may not always remove the obstacle completely. It can sometimes change denial into delay, reduce the seriousness of a difficulty or guide the couple towards the correct doctor, treatment, Astrologer, teacher or spiritual practice.
Jupiter also represents the Guru. Its protection may therefore arrive through divine grace, wise human guidance or medical science. All three can become channels through which help reaches the couple.
The Rashi, Navamsha and Saptamsha Charts
The Rashi chart must provide the basic promise. Divisional charts should not be read independently to manufacture a result that does not exist in the birth horoscope.
The Navamsha helps us understand the deeper strength and maturity of planets. The Saptamsha is examined specifically for children, fertility and the experience of parenthood. A promise in the Rashi chart should ideally receive confirmation in the Saptamsha.
The Saptamsha is not a replacement for the birth horoscope. It is a magnifying glass that allows us to study more closely what the main chart has already indicated.
Beeja Sphuta and Kshetra Sphuta
Beeja Sphuta, meaning the “seed point,” is traditionally calculated for the man. Kshetra Sphuta, meaning the “field point,” is traditionally calculated for the woman.
The symbolism is straightforward: the seed must possess vitality, and the field must be capable of receiving and nourishing it. These mathematical points are studied in the Rashi chart and especially in the Saptamsha. In several childless couples, I have found valuable clues when these points occupied or became connected with the 6th, 8th or 12th houses.
However, Beeja Sphuta and Kshetra Sphuta are supporting factors, not independent verdicts. They must be studied with the 5th house, its lord, Jupiter, the Moon, Venus, planetary strength, Dashas and both partners’ horoscopes.
I am thankful to Shri K N Rao who gave us a great idea in his book on children and when I tested it, I was convinced it works as long as you have an accurate time of birth. Place the BS or KS in the Saptamsa as though it was a planet in the D-7 Chart.
When Horoscopes of Both Husband and Wife Show Putra Dosha
Putra Dosha becomes far more serious when the same indications are strongly repeated in the horoscopes of both husband and wife. The difficulty is not merely doubled; in practical terms, it may become multiplied because neither horoscope provides sufficient protection to the other.
Nevertheless, Astrology should never replace medical diagnosis. Couples must consult qualified doctors, understand the medical causes, treatment possibilities, costs and risks, and then make an informed decision.
When both horoscopes show severe repeated affliction, Jupiter offers little protection and prolonged treatment has caused considerable physical, financial and emotional suffering, adoption or another lawful path to parenthood may be thoughtfully considered. Such decisions must arise through mature reflection—not through fear created by an Astrologer.
Adoption as a Meeting of Destinies
Adoption should never be regarded as a second-rate substitute for biological parenthood. It can represent a beautiful karmic transformation: a person longing to receive a child becomes the protector of a child longing to receive a family.
The unfinished account may then be settled through love, responsibility and service. Instead of continuing to ask, “Why have I not received a child?” the person begins to ask, “Which child is waiting to receive my care?”
Surrogacy is another lawful possibility, but it involves medical, emotional, ethical and legal considerations. Astrology may offer a broader perspective, but decisions concerning adoption or surrogacy require proper professional guidance.
Putra Dosha and Marital Separation
In certain horoscopes, marital difficulties become more intense after the birth of a child. When Putra Dosha and serious marital afflictions operate together, conflict between husband and wife may separate one parent from the child.
Here, Karma works through two connected areas of life: the disturbed marriage becomes the instrument, while separation from the child becomes the result. This is why horoscope matching should include marital stability, the promise of children and the capacity of both horoscopes to withstand difficult Dashas.
These matters are best studied before marriage. Prevention, awareness and careful matching are more useful than frightening explanations offered after a crisis has already begun.
How House Lords Modify the Result
Favourable connections of the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th houses may support family growth and happiness through children.
A strong 5th lord in the Ascendant can connect children closely with the native’s life. In the 2nd, it may expand the family; in the 7th, it connects children with marriage; and in the 11th, it can fulfil the desire for children.
The 2nd house represents family and lineage. Its favourable connection with the 5th supports family continuity. The 11th lord in the 5th, when strong and unafflicted, may indicate educated, prosperous and virtuous children.
By contrast, the 6th lord in the 5th may bring conflict, illness or hostility into the parent-child relationship. The 8th lord there may introduce sudden or prolonged difficulties, while the 12th lord may bring separation or substantial expenditure on conception, childbirth, treatment or remedies.
These are broad principles. Every planet owns a particular sign, possesses a certain degree of strength and may govern two houses. Its complete role must be assessed before a result is declared.
Strength Decides How Much of a Rule Will Manifest
Maharishi Parashara repeatedly advises Astrologers to judge results according to the strength or weakness of the planet producing them.
A planet possessing full strength may deliver its promised result fully. A planet with only partial strength may produce only a portion of it. When a planet owns two houses, the results of both lordships must be combined. Contradictory indications may reduce each other, while compatible indications may manifest at different stages of life.
This classical instruction protects us from mechanical Astrology. A written rule may appear absolute, but the horoscope decides how much of that rule can become reality.
Dashas and Timing
Even a powerful combination may remain inactive until its appropriate planetary period arrives. The Dasha and Antardasha of the 5th lord, Jupiter, planets occupying or influencing the 5th house, and the lords connected with fertility or obstruction must be studied.
Transits may trigger the promise, but they cannot independently create something that the birth horoscope does not contain. Timing must therefore follow promise: first establish what is possible, then determine when it may occur.
Can Remedies Reduce Putra Dosha?
When Putra Dosha is mild or moderate and the horoscope contains protective factors, remedies may help reduce its intensity. Sometimes a remedy changes the event; sometimes it converts denial into delay; sometimes it reduces suffering; and sometimes it provides the courage and wisdom to face what cannot be changed.
A meaningful remedy should resemble the karmic debt. If the difficulty concerns children, service rendered to children becomes especially appropriate. A person may sponsor a child’s food, education or medical care, assist an orphanage, support children with disabilities or protect vulnerable children.
The horoscope may also be examined for Pitru Dosha or Matru Dosha, as neglected duties towards parents or ancestors can sometimes accompany difficulties concerning children. Hindus may perform appropriate ancestral rites, including Tarpanam on Amavasya, according to their family tradition. Rameswaram is traditionally associated with such rituals. People of other faiths may remember their ancestors through prayer, gratitude and charity.
Hindus may worship Bala Krishna, perform Shiva Abhishekam or undertake Putrakameshti Yagna under proper guidance. However, no Homa or ritual should be sold as a guaranteed transaction with God. Its value depends upon sincerity, correct performance and the spiritual maturity of everyone involved.
Service Is Greater Than Ritual Alone
If the karmic account concerns neglected children, genuine service to children may be more meaningful than rituals, prayers, poojas, havans alone. Begin to love, protect and support children—not merely the child you hope to receive, but the children whom life has already placed around you hoping you may help them with food, education, clothing, shelter and hope.
Remedies should also work alongside proper medical care. Astrology and medicine need not compete. Prayer can provide hope and strength, while medical science investigates the physical cause and offers treatment.
Putra Dosha as Proof of Karmic Continuity
Putra Dosha teaches us that Karma is not merely punishment. It is also correction, repayment and education. It returns us to responsibilities once ignored and teaches us the value of what may previously have been neglected. At one end of the 5th-house spectrum lies Poorna Putra Sukham—complete happiness through children. At the other lie delay, anxiety, separation, loss or denial. Between these extremes are countless variations and a range of possibilities. It is in this region of the spectrum the Astrologer has a great role to play in modifying karma. In extreme cases of afflictions adoption may be the only way out.
The duty of a responsible Astrologer is not to find one frightening combination and pronounce a verdict. It is to examine the Rashi chart, planetary strength, Jupiter, the Navamsha and Saptamsha, Beeja and Kshetra Sphuta, Dashas, transits and both partners’ horoscopes before estimating where the person truly stands on this scale. Guruji EKDK always insists that the moment you know you are having a problem related to children even without reading the horoscope, one should associate with an orphanage or get involved in some social service activities that relate to children. The logic is you need the blessings of children to reverse the sin related to children in your past life.
