The Lord of 1st house in the 7th Bhava
The 1st house is I or me from the point of view of the person whose horoscope we are talking about. Take your horoscope. Spot the 1st house. This is called the rising sign when you were born. Touch that house marked as 1 and say "This is me" or "This is I" or "I am this". Now you know why the most important point in the horoscope is the 1st house. The answer is each one of you happens to be the most important point of reference in this world.
In interviews or in any debate or discussion, the phrase 'according to me' is entirely redundant, as everything we speak is inherently from our own perspective. This linguistic habit reflects a deeper psychological truth: human existence is fundamentally ego-driven. We are wired to believe we are always right—a self-justification so strong that even criminals believe their actions are correct. This universal entitlement is perfectly captured in the egoistic phrase, 'Do you know who I am?' Because life is entirely self-centric, it is only natural that the horoscope revolves completely around the 1st house among the 12 houses.
So the 1st house is so much the "I" or "Me" or "Ego" or "my mind". This is where it all starts.
The 7th house is the other person. The other person in your life is always opposite. If first house is "I or Me", the 7th house is my wife or my husband (Spouse). The 7th house is simply anyone on the opposite side. When you play tennis, your opponent is always on the opposite side. However you are playing a game together. You need the other. Without the other there is no game.
Much like a battery requires both positive and negative terminals to function, human dynamics rely on two distinct, complementary energies. In this context, 'negative' is purely a scientific term denoting electrical polarity, carrying no moral or judgmental weight. Comparing men and women to these poles is an explanation of energetic balance, not a value judgment on gender roles. One cannot exist without the other. The 1st house cannot exist without the 7th house. In fact this is true of all houses that are opposites in the horoscope. For example the 12th house cannot exist without the 6th house.
Marriage happens between 2 people of the opposite sexes for the purpose of begetting a child. The 11th house (fulfillment of desire) from the 7th house of sexual union happens to be the 5th house. So children are a result of a sexual union or marriage. Therefore the 1st house and 7th house are strongly related yet opposite. For example man and wife are strongly related yet they are opposite types.
The 1st house is the business person and the 7th house is the customer. If 10th house is house of purpose of life then marriage the 7th house is another purpose of life for most of us. Maharishi Parasara has described the 7th house as the house of business.
According to Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Maharishi Parasara defines the 7th house (Jāyā Bhāva) in Chapter 13, Verse 8 as an important house for examining relationships, business, and travel. The shloka specifically indicates that this house governs the spouse, long journeys, trade, missing items, and also as a maraka graha (danger).
All opposite houses are like a mirror. So the 7th house is a mirror of your 1st house. Your relationship therefore is so much to do with what you actually are.
Now that we have understood the background of the 2 houses, namely 1st house and the 7th house we have to study the following 2 shlokas from text book of Astrology.
The 1st house lord in the 7th house.
लग्नेशे युवतिस्थाने देशान्तरगमी भवेत् ।
कामसक्तो महाभागो द्विभार्यः स्त्रीप्रियः सदा ॥
Transliteration:
Lagneśe yuvatisthāne deśāntaragamī bhavet |
Kāmāsakto mahābhāgo dvibhāryaḥ strīpriyaḥ sadā ||
The 1st word लग्नेशे (Lagneśe) means the lord of Lagna (Isha = lord of ).
The 7th house is called युवतिस्थाने (yuvatisthāne).
Foreign Travel (Desantara-gami): The native will travel many times to foreign lands or reside for short time in foreign lands. Even within his own country, he will travel inland several time. People having this combination love to drive on highways, like to frequent airports. Let me tell you that some of the people I know have gone abroad countless times that they have complained "I am tired of so many foreign trips". It is almost like having wheels on one's feet. Wheels are around them all the time, and nowadays it is the wheels on the suitcase as it is dragged around in the airports.
The 7th house is the house of meeting or mating.
We have to learn more Astrology from the hidden meaning than what is told directly to us. Do not read the shloka like you read text books in school. You must try to learn more than what the eye sees. Here the Maharishi speaks about foreign when talking about the 7th house we must understand that the 7th house is linked to foreign. The clue here comes from what is called Bhavat Bhavam concept in Astrology. Here we count 10 houses from the 10th house and reach the 7th house. So the purpose of life may be connected to going abroad. Work may be the main reason why so many countless foreign trips are undertaken by the person. The 7th house is the house of meeting or mating.
The key word for 7th house is Relationship. Any type of relationship relates to 7th house. Every moment in our life we have some relationship. Right now as you read this article, we are having the Guru-Shishya (Teacher-Student) relationship. Think about it. Only in meditation we do not experience any relationship. In that state we are to ourselves.
High Desire (Sexual) Energy.
Sensual Desires (Kama-sakta): The individual will be highly passionate and devoted to sensual pleasures. The word Sakta is used to denote strong or high energy in matters of desires. There will be a lot of motivation to meet as many people as possible. Kama does not mean only sex, it means any strong obsessive desire. Kama is ruled by Venus. Venus is the lord of the 7th house in Kalapurusha Scheme of the 12 zodiac signs.
Illustrious person
Greatly Fortunate (Maha-bhaga): Despite many challenges, the person is deemed fundamentally lucky or highly fortunate.
More than one marriage
Two Wives (Dvibharyah): The text literally states the native may have "two wives". In a modern context, this translates to having more than one significant, life-altering romantic relationship or remarriage. Since for centuries most of the Astrologers were men they always avoided the word spouse and use the word "wife". Actually the right words here is "Two spouses". Obviously the law does not permit more than one marriage except in Islam. However many Hindu Kings even had 100 wives.
Fond of wife/women
Devoted to Spouse (Stri-priyah): The native will always be fond of, attached to, and protective of their spouse or women in general.
लग्नेशे सप्तमे पापे भार्या तस्य न जीवति।
शुभेऽटनो दरिद्रो वा विरक्तो वा नृपोऽपि वा॥
Transliteration:
lagneśe saptame pāpe bhāryā tasya na jīvati |
śubhe'ṭano daridro vā virakto vā nṛpo'pi vā ||
If the 1st Lord is a Malefic (Paape): Parasara writes that the "wife does not live long" (bhāryā tasya na jīvati). This indicates severe marital friction, health crises for the partner, or early loss of the spouse if the planet is afflicted
If the 1st Lord is a Benefic (Shubhe): The results vary highly depending on the planet's strength. Parasara notes that the native could wander aimlessly (atano), face extreme financial strain (daridro), become completely detached from material life (virakto), or conversely, become a king (nṛpo'pi) if the planet is exceptionally strong.
