Introduction
Can the same family problem be seen in more than one horoscope?
Yes. In fact, whenever birth details are reliable, important family events frequently appear in the horoscopes of everyone directly involved.
A daughter’s horoscope may show that she argues with her mother. The mother’s horoscope may show distress through a daughter or difficulty maintaining harmony with her children. The father’s horoscope may reveal that one child becomes the cause of considerable worry. Meanwhile, the daughter’s horoscope may show that she does not accept her father’s advice.
At first, these may appear to be separate astrological indications. In reality, they form a single karmic chain.
The daughter is experiencing her karma through her parents. The mother is experiencing her karma through her daughter. The father is experiencing his karma through the same child. Each horoscope reveals a different side of one interconnected family experience.
Horoscopes of Mother and Daughter
Suppose the mother’s 5th lord is placed in the 6th house. This may indicate a serious Putra Dosha—a karmic affliction connected with children. A careful examination of the Saptamsha chart (D-7) may reveal the nature and intensity of this affliction more clearly.
Now examine the daughter’s horoscope. The 4th house represents the mother. If the lord of the 4th house is placed in the 6th house—the house of conflict, hostility and disputes—the daughter may perceive her mother as an opponent.
Consequently, even the mother’s concern or guidance may be misunderstood as criticism or interference.
The same interconnected pattern may appear in the daughter’s relationship with her father. The 9th house represents the father. If the 9th house, its lord or the relevant significator is severely afflicted—for example, through the influence of Rahu and Saturn—the daughter may experience difficulties, misunderstanding or emotional distance in her relationship with him. In Astrology, we describe this as an affliction affecting the significations of the 9th house which relates to father.
Thus, the mother’s horoscope may show suffering through a child, while the daughter’s horoscope reveals conflict with her mother and difficulty relating to her father. These are not necessarily independent indications. They may be different astrological expressions of the same interconnected family karma.
This is what I call Interconnected Karma.
Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot
The New Testament presents a profound example of Interconnected Karma through the relationship between Jesus and Judas Iscariot.
Jesus repeatedly foretold that He would be betrayed, handed over to His enemies and crucified. His sacrifice was understood as part of a divine purpose—the redemption of humanity. But for the crucifixion to take place in the manner foretold, someone had to identify and betray Him. Judas became the person through whom that part of the event unfolded.
Without the betrayal, the arrest would not have occurred in the same way. Without the arrest, the path towards the crucifixion would not have unfolded as described. Therefore, the destinies of Jesus and Judas became interconnected within one decisive event.
Jesus had the destiny of being betrayed and sacrificed. Judas carried the destiny of becoming the betrayer. The same incident appeared differently in their two lives: for Jesus, it became sacrifice and fulfilment of His mission; for Judas, it became betrayal, guilt and tragedy.
Jesus recognised that the event had to occur, but He did not absolve Judas of responsibility. He said:
“The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man!”
—Matthew 26:24
This statement beautifully expresses the mystery of interconnected destiny. An event may be destined to happen, and another person may become its instrument, but the instrument is still responsible for the intention and manner in which he acts.
Therefore, Judas should not be understood merely as an innocent person forced to betray Jesus. The larger event formed part of the divine plan, but Judas participated through his own weakness, motives and choices. Destiny created the meeting point; individual character determined how each person played his role.
This is also seen within families. If a father’s horoscope indicates suffering through a child, there must be a child through whom that experience manifests. If the child’s horoscope shows rebellion against the father, both horoscopes are describing different sides of the same event. Yet the karmic connection does not remove personal responsibility. Each person remains accountable for how he or she responds.
Jesus had to face betrayal, and Judas became the betrayer. One destiny required the event; another destiny supplied the instrument. Their roles were different, but their lives became interconnected through the same moment.
Jesus said about Judas:
“It had been good for that man if he had not been born.” —Matthew 26:24, KJV
This statement reveals the terrible weight of the role Judas chose to play. The betrayal formed part of the foretold event, yet Judas remained responsible for his action.
In a similar way, parents undergoing extreme suffering through a child sometimes say, “I wish this child had never been born.” Such words usually arise not from a complete absence of love, but from unbearable pain, helplessness and emotional exhaustion. The child’s horoscope may show conflict with the parents, while the parents’ horoscopes reveal suffering through that very child. Their destinies meet within the same painful relationship.
Yet there is an important distinction. Jesus’ words belong to a unique theological context and should not be used to suggest that a troubled child ought never to have existed. In family life, the statement is better understood as evidence of how intense interconnected destiny can become. When people cannot understand the karmic purpose of their relationship, pain may reach a point where they begin to regret the relationship itself—even the birth that created it.
Two Business Partners - One Karmic Purpose
A businessman’s horoscope clearly indicated that entering into a partnership would inevitably lead to financial loss. After carefully studying his chart, I advised him never to enter a partnership business in this lifetime.
However, when a difficult Dasha and Antardasha began, another man entered his life with a partnership proposal. Despite my earlier warning, the businessman accepted the offer, and they started the venture together.
Before long, the business fell into serious financial trouble. The losses became enormous, and bankruptcy appeared imminent. It was only then that both partners approached me for an astrological consultation.
When I examined their horoscopes together, I discovered something remarkable: both charts clearly said “NO” to partnership business. Neither of them was astrologically suited for a business partnership. Furthermore, the usual principles of astrological compatibility revealed that they were fundamentally incompatible with each other.
The timing was equally significant. Both partners were passing through unfavourable Dasha and Antardasha combinations. Saturn’s transit was also adverse in both horoscopes, according to the Gochar principles explained in Phaladeepika.
Why, then, did two people—both unsuited for partnership and incompatible with each other—meet at precisely that time and decide to become business partners?
Their meeting did not appear accidental. Each person’s difficult planetary period created the circumstances through which the other entered his life. One became the instrument through whom the other’s promised financial loss manifested. At the same time, each was experiencing his own karma through the same disastrous partnership.
They came together not because their horoscopes supported success, but because their horoscopes contained matching indications of failure. Their destinies intersected to produce one shared karmic event.
The wrong side of the Law of attraction
Today, many intelligent and successful people speak enthusiastically about the Law of Attraction. It is usually presented as a positive force: think about prosperity and prosperity will find you; visualise the right people and they will enter your life; maintain positive vibrations and favourable opportunities will appear.
But attraction does not always operate only for our benefit.
Unknown to many, the Law of Attraction can work in the opposite direction as well. People may be attracted not merely by compatible ambitions, but by compatible karmic weaknesses. Sometimes two individuals meet because each carries precisely the planetary combination required to activate the other’s difficult karma.
The story of Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot offers a profound example of attraction operating for a purpose that is not entirely good.
Judas was not a stranger who appeared only on the night of the betrayal. He was first drawn towards Jesus, became one of His twelve disciples, travelled with Him, listened to His teachings and witnessed His works. Outwardly, Judas appeared to be attracted to the Master and His spiritual mission. Yet the New Testament also reveals a darker weakness within him—his attachment to money. John describes Judas as the keeper of the common purse and accuses him of stealing from it. Eventually, Judas agreed to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Incidentally, 30 is number 3 and number 3 is related to Jupiter or Guru and the God factor as Trinity (3).
Why was Judas, with such a weakness, drawn so close to Jesus?
Jesus had already foretold that He would be betrayed, handed over and crucified. For that event to unfold as foretold, the betrayer could not remain far away. He had to come close, earn trust, know where Jesus could be found and finally identify Him to those who came to arrest Him.
In this sense, Judas was attracted towards Jesus for a karmic—or, in Christian language, providential—purpose. The attraction brought him close enough to become the instrument of betrayal. Jesus had to undergo the sacrifice that awaited Him, while Judas had to face the consequences of the role he freely chose to play.
However, this does not mean that Judas was forced to betray Jesus or that his wrongdoing became good merely because the crucifixion had been foretold.
The sacrifice was destined, but the betrayer remained responsible for the betrayal. Destiny required that the event should unfold; Judas’s weakness and choices determined the part he played in it.
From the perspective of karma and rebirth, Judas may have carried unresolved negative karma from a previous birth, making him vulnerable to becoming the instrument of betrayal. Such a painful role would not ordinarily fall upon a spiritually purified soul. Although the sacrifice of Jesus had to take place, the person who chose to betray Him remained responsible for that choice. Jesus, knowing the gravity of Judas’s action, declared: “It had been good for that man if he had not been born.” — Matthew 26:24, KJV
The same mystery appeared in the lives of the two businessmen. They were strongly attracted to each other and immediately believed they had discovered the perfect opportunity. It was almost business at first sight. Yet both horoscopes opposed partnership, both men were passing through difficult planetary periods, and both were under unfavourable Saturn transits. Their attraction did not lead them towards prosperity; it led them towards the fulfilment of a shared karmic event.
Judas was drawn close to the person he would later betray. The two businessmen were drawn towards the partnership through which both would experience financial suffering. In each case, attraction created the relationship, but the relationship became the means through which destiny unfolded.
