Since the emerald and the little finger are ruled by Mercury, and Mars treats Mercury as its enemy, I reasoned you must be going through a Mars period right now. Over the years, I received numerous emails from readers who said they could not fully understand what was really happening in the incident I described. If you too are wondering about the deeper logic behind this experience, let me explain my perspective.
Whenever we enter a difficult phase of life, our past karma begins to manifest in the form of challenges. In astrology, this may occur during an unfavourable Dasha–Antardasha combination or an intense period such as a difficult Sade Sati. To minimise the impact of these karmic influences, we seek protection through properly prescribed gemstones, sincere prayers, spiritual disciplines, charitable acts, and other remedial measures.
However, the karmic system does not simply allow us to escape the consequences of our past actions. Instead, it often works in subtle and unexpected ways. It may influence our thoughts and behaviour so that we gradually abandon the very remedies that are protecting us. A person may suddenly lose interest in visiting temples, stop performing daily prayers, discontinue spiritual practices, remove a beneficial gemstone, or drift away from anything that was helping to reduce the intensity of suffering. In other words, when difficult karma is due to unfold, the mind itself may become an instrument through which those protective influences are set aside.
A classic example of this principle can be found in the Mahabharata. Karna was born with his divine Kavacha (armour) and Kundala (earrings), which made him virtually invincible. As long as he possessed them, defeating him in battle was nearly impossible. However, Karna had chosen to support the unrighteous Kauravas, and according to the larger workings of Dharma, he had to face the consequences of that choice.
Foreseeing what was about to happen, the Sun God—Karna's divine father—appeared in his dream and warned him not to part with his Kavacha and Kundala, no matter who requested them. The very next day, Indra arrived disguised as a poor Brahmin and asked Karna for these divine gifts as alms. Despite the warning he had received, Karna honoured his lifelong vow of generosity and gave them away. Once his divine protection was removed, destiny was free to take its course.
In my opinion, karma often operates in a similar manner. Before a difficult karmic period unfolds, circumstances may arise that separate us from the very protections that were shielding us. Whether it is a gemstone, a spiritual practice, or another genuine remedial measure, something may happen that compels us to abandon it, allowing the karmic process to unfold with greater intensity.
My own experience with my Emerald ring illustrates this principle. I had been wearing an Emerald continuously since 1995. In my horoscope, Mercury is the lord of the 9th house, the house of fortune, blessings, and divine grace. Emerald, being the gemstone associated with Mercury, strengthens its beneficial influence and enhances the protection it offers.
At that time, I was running Mars Antardasha within Jupiter Mahadasha. For my horoscope, Jupiter is not an entirely favourable planet because it also owns the 12th house, the house of losses and expenditure. During this period, I experienced several health-related challenges, including recurring eye problems and issues affecting my spine.
From my perspective, the Emerald was reducing the intensity of these adverse karmic influences. Yet the karmic process still had to unfold. Interestingly, I developed a skin rash precisely beneath the Emerald ring on my little finger. The irritation became so uncomfortable that I was compelled to remove the ring. Once I stopped wearing it, I soon realised that my difficulties had intensified significantly. Recognising this, I decided to wear the Emerald again despite the reappearance of the skin rash.
What fascinated me most was what happened afterwards. The skin rash persisted throughout the Mars Antardasha. The moment that planetary period came to an end, the rash disappeared on its own. I was smart enough to continue wearing the Emerald.
One final observation is worth reflecting upon. Have you noticed that many people become angry with God during the most difficult phases of their lives? Some stop visiting temples, abandon their daily prayers, and even begin to question or reject the very existence of God. From an astrological perspective, this is not merely an emotional reaction. It may be one of the subtle ways in which karma operates. When a person is destined to undergo the consequences of past actions, the karmic process may influence the mind to distance itself from the very sources of divine grace and spiritual protection. By giving up prayer, faith, or genuine remedial measures, the individual becomes more vulnerable to the unfolding of difficult karmic influences indicated in the horoscope.
