The True Power of Astrological Remedies : Tsunami 2004

Can astrological remedies truly protect us from the consequences of past-life karma? Or are they merely rituals with psychological value? In this article, I share three remarkable real-life cases of clients who narrowly escaped the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami of December 26, 2004. According to their horoscopes, each of them was passing through planetary periods indicating serious danger through water (Jala Ganda). Following the principles laid down in the Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, they had performed the Mrityunjaya Japa Homa before the disaster. These extraordinary incidents raise an important question: Do astrological remedies completely erase karma, or do they simply reduce its intensity? Drawing upon classical Vedic astrology and firsthand experiences from my astrological practice, this article explores how sincere remedial measures, combined with divine grace, may transform a potentially fatal karmic event into a life-changing experience of protection and faith.

The True Power of Astrological Remedies : Tsunami 2004

The True Power of Astrological Remedies

When I first entered the exciting world of Vedic Astrology in the early 1990s, I held a completely different view on remedies. Back then, I constantly questioned the logic behind them. I wondered if they acted merely like medical painkillers numbing the discomfort of a difficult planetary phase without actually curing the underlying issue, buying time until the difficult period naturally passed.
Despite my initial skepticism, I faithfully recommended the remedies outlined in the ancient text, Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra (and Bhrigu Sutram). Today, I am deeply grateful that I did. This foundational masterpiece of Vedic astrology spans two volumes and is available across India and globally. I highly recommend that every Astrology enthusiast keeps a copy at home; it may one day serve as a profound guide for someone in your family. Volume 2 specifically addresses the precise remedies required during challenging planetary periods (Dashas &  Bhuktis/Antardasha).

Initially, I prescribed these remedies blindly, much like a pharmacist dispensing medication without fully understanding the underlying chemical formulation. However, by the year 2000, the deep logic behind these ancient remedies became perfectly clear to me. Grasping this core rationale allowed me to confidently develop my own complementary remedies rooted in the original philosophy of Karma and purpose of re-incarnations.

A Prophetic Warning:

Flashback : Six to nine  months before the 2004 Tsunami

Roughly six to nine months before the devastating December 2004 Tsunami hit the coast of Tamil Nadu, three separate clients came to me for Astrological consultations. Each of their charts revealed an identical, alarming pattern: an imminent threat of death by drowning, classically known as Jala Ganda (water danger). In Vedic Astrology, the Moon is the primary indicator of danger from water, often triggered by specific placements such as the Moon residing in the 6th house.

Compounding this risk, all three individuals were concurrently running a highly volatile Saturn period which was also a Maraka (death-inflicting) planetary period spanning 2004 to 2005. Following the exact guidelines of Maharishi Parasara, I advised them to perform the protective Mrityunjaya Japa Homa. They all dutifully completed this ritual at the Sri Ayyappa Temple in Egmore, Chennai.

In addition to the spiritual remedies, I offered practical, common-sense advice: "Strictly avoid beaches, waterfalls, and rough rivers until this dangerous phase passes."

The planetary afflictions in all three charts stemmed from Saturn, a planet that rules the number 8. Because of this, I warned them to exercise extreme caution on dates totalling 8 and on days governed by Saturn’s stars, such as Pushyami (the 8th star) for example. I also instructed them to incorporate water into their daily charity, offering water to Gods and Goddesses during prayers, watering wilted plants, donating it to those who are thirsty and feeding water to birds. The underlying karmic principle is simple: what you give to others acts as your shield. By giving water generously, water will protect you in return.

Client No.1 - Raveendra Sharma

The Fateful Morning of December 26, 2004

Did you notice that on December 26, 2004, the date numerically adds up to 8 (2+6=8), and the full date 26+12+2004=2042 also adds upto 8. On this day my mobile phone rang at around 9:45 AM. It was the frantic father of one of the 3 clients I am going to talk about in this article, a young man in his early twenties named Raveendra Sharma (name changed for privacy). Later I came to know,  that morning, Raveendra's friends had convinced him to join them on the beaches of Mamallapuram, located about 60 kilometers from Chennai. His father was weeping on the line, fearing the absolute worst because Raveendra was not answering his phone. He recalled the astrological phrase "Jala-Ganda" I had used during the consultation. I immediately tried to calm him and reminded him, "He completed the Mrityunjaya Japa Homa, so please do not lose heart." I continued to offer reassurance, and before hanging up, I used a positive affirmation technique I practice regularly by telling him, "Call me back soon with the good news that Raveendra is safe and on his way home."

Later, his friends recounted the terrifying sequence of events. While the rest of the group stayed closer to the coastal road, Raveendra had walked directly toward the waves of the sea. Suddenly, the massive tsunami waves surged. He turned and ran for his life, nearly escaping the torrent, but was swept back into the ocean alongside uprooted palm trees at the final second. Fortunately, his friends located him among rocks  and nesting between branches of trees with sand all over him. Fortunately his friends managed to revive him using basic first-aid techniques. While his mobile phone was permanently lost to the sea, Raveendra returned home physically unharmed. His father was overwhelmed with joy and relief, even as the family grappled with the sheer shock of how close they had come to tragedy.

Client No.2 - Mr Govindan

Uploaded imageThe second case involved Mr. Govindan (name changed to protect his privacy), a retired government official who was happily enjoying his post-retirement life. He and his wife had chosen to spend a peaceful vacation at the GRT Resort on the shores of Mamallapuram, near Chennai. The vacation was a birthday gift from their son. It was their first visit to the beach in nearly 7 years.

As they stood admiring the vast expanse of the sea for well over an hour, the atmosphere was calm and serene. Suddenly, Mr. Govindan felt an inexplicable urge to return to their room. His wife wished to remain a little longer and gently persuaded him to stay. However, he firmly insisted, saying, "It is time for us to go back to the hotel." Reluctantly, she agreed, and they left the beach approximately around 8:45 am.

They had barely reached the first floor of the resort when they witnessed a horrifying sight. Water came surging in from every direction, and terrified people were screaming and running for safety. Their newly purchased car was swept away by the powerful waves, eventually coming to rest much farther up the main road, completely buried in sand and rendered beyond use. Later, Mr. Govindan's son, who had been both my client and a close friend for several years, telephoned me to describe the terrifying incident. His entire family and I felt profoundly grateful that Mr. Govindan had earlier performed the Mrityunjaya Japa Homa, as prescribed in the Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra.

The horoscope of Mr Govindan had clearly indicated a serious danger connected with water, and at that time he was running the sub-period (bhukti) of a planet owning a maraka house, traditionally associated with life-threatening events. While the material loss of the car could not be avoided, the timely performance of the prescribed astrological remedy appeared to have transformed what could have been a fatal karmic event into one from which both he and his wife emerged safely. Such cases illustrate the traditional astrological view that remedies do not erase past karma entirely but can lessen its severity and protect an individual from its most harmful consequences.

Client No.3 - Kumaraswamy

The third case involved a middle-aged gentleman named Kumaraswamy who, on the fateful morning of December 26, 2004, found himself at Chennai's Marina Beach, the second-longest natural urban beach in the world. Several months after the Tsunami, during a consultation with me, he recounted his harrowing brush with the disaster. He began by saying that he had not visited the beach for nearly five years. Curious, I asked him why he had chosen that particular morning to go there. He replied that from the moment he woke up that day, he felt an unusually powerful and irresistible urge to visit the beach and take a dip in the sea.

I remembered in an earlier consultation, before the Tsunami, when I had specifically cautioned him about a Jala-Ganda (danger from water) indicated in his horoscope. He was going through a Saturn Antardasha and Saturn happens to be a maraka planet also. As usual I warned him about danger during Saturn dominated days and dates.

Yet, on that fateful morning, he did precisely the opposite. Compelled by an inexplicable inner urge, he walked into the sea for a bath at the very moment the devastating Tsunami waves were racing towards the shore. By now, the reader may have anticipated the outcome. This gentleman had also performed the Mrityunjaya Japa Homa as an astrological remedy before the event. When the tsunami waves suddenly struck the coastline, he reacted quickly and managed to run to safety before the powerful waters could engulf him.

From the perspective of traditional Vedic astrology, this case once again illustrates the belief that while remedies may not always prevent karmic events from unfolding altogether, they can reduce their severity and offer protection from life-threatening consequences. Those who believe in the efficacy of astrological remedies may view such incidents as examples of adverse karma being mitigated through sincere performance of the prescribed remedial measures.

What's going on?

Why were these three people on the beach on December 26, 2004?

The main point about these 3 people is that in their horoscope Jala-ganda very strongly revealed. They were also going through a Saturn Antardasha and Saturn was also a maraka. There were 2 or more reasons for danger in water for all the 3 involving Jala Rasi (Water sign) and also Sarpa Drekkana area coinciding with Jala Rasi.

One aspect of these three cases has always fascinated me. The three clients very rarely go to the beach. In fact, Mr. Govindan's son told me that his father has been to the beach 7 years ago. Yet, by an extraordinary coincidence, all three clients happened to be on the beach on the fateful morning of December 26, 2004. Why did circumstances bring them there on that particular day?

My understanding is that astrological remedies do not completely erase the karma accumulated from previous births. Rather, they reduce the intensity with which that karma manifests. If a person is destined to experience Jala Ganda, a serious danger arising through water, the remedial measures may not prevent the karmic event from presenting itself, but they can transform what could have been a fatal experience into one from which the individual escapes with life intact.

In all three cases, the clients still came face to face with the terrifying force of the tsunami. The fear they experienced and the memory of that day remain with them even now. Whenever they recall those moments, they shudder at how close they came to losing their lives. From the traditional Vedic astrological perspective, that frightening encounter itself may have fulfilled the karmic indication, while the prescribed remedies reduced its destructive intensity.

Perhaps this is how karma sometimes operates. It allows a person to witness the danger that was destined to occur, to experience its fear and uncertainty, yet still grants divine protection through sincere prayer and appropriate astrological remedies. Such experiences offer a glimpse of what might have happened had no remedial measures been undertaken. They also strengthen one's faith in God and in the wisdom of the ancient seers who prescribed these remedies. Unsurprisingly, all three of these clients developed a much deeper conviction in the efficacy of Vedic Astrology after surviving the tsunami than those who have never personally experienced the protective role of astrological remedies.

Believe it or not, the Mrityunjaya Japa Homa that these clients performed was neither elaborate nor expensive. In 2004, the ritual could be performed by the priests at the Ayyappa Prarthana Mandhir, Egmore, Chennai, for approximately ₹800. If such a modest offering could, by God's grace, mitigate the severity of life-threatening karma, it serves as a powerful reminder that the true value of an astrological remedy lies not in its monetary cost, but in the sincerity with which it is performed and the divine blessings it invokes.

Who should do the Mrityunjaya Japa Homa?
